Art Sandy Spring

2010 Sculpture Event

The second ArtSS in the Open celebration took place on May 15, 2010, at historic Griffith House in Sandy Springs.  It featured an international reception, Art around the World.  Highlights were the announcement of the winner of the second juried outdoor sculpture contest sponsored by ArtSS and viewing the sculptures of all ten finalists.

Entries ranged from the inspirational like a forged steel horse named Magic that was created by Sandy Springs sculptor, Eric Strauss, to the abstract, Companion, by Spelman College Fine Arts Professor, Toby Martin.  The artists were on hand to share the vision behind their works.

The winning sculptor, Andrew Crawford, of Atlanta, GA, received a $15,000 award for his seven-foot tall, 250-pound, stainless steel sculpture, Spooky Tooth"This sculpture, Spooky Tooth, is part of a body of work that found its inspiration in manufactured objects, mechanical movement and industrial design,"  wrote Crawford in a description of his art.  And, according to the artist, "the goal of the work was to celebrate the evolution of form found in objects that we see and use every day."  Spooky Tooth had been on display on the campus of Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, until it was brought to the Richard home as a Contest finalist.

The remaining nine finalists each received a stipend of $1,000. Our distinguished panel of judges included Andre Freitas, Sculptor/Owner of AFX Studios, Anne Lambert Tracht, Art Consultant, ConsultArt, Inc., David Landis, Sculptor/ArtSS in the Open - 2008 Winner, and Nicolas I.
